On 10 Mar 1842, China, Ningpo. A strong column of Chinese attacked here, but was successfully repulsed by the British including the 49th.
It was decided to attack at Tsu K'I on 14 March,with troops including some of the 49th who distinguished themselves by their spirit and determination.
On 16 March the 49th helped to force Chinese to evacuate a very strong position at Changkt Pass
During Apr 1842, India, Calcutta, Fort William. During the next two months sickness increased - 16 Sergeants, 13 Corporals, three Drummers and 193 Privates. Attributed to climate, exacerbated by 'unparalleled intemperance'
On 18 May 1842, China, Chapu. Troops including 49th which had landed here at promontory on which the town was situated. There was only one point of resistance, a small joss house held by Tartars. Attacking this the Regiment suffered severe casualties
On 28 May 1842, China, Chapu. Troops left Chapu and arrived at Wusung on 12 June.
The Regiment 49th reached Shanghai and captured the town without resistance, the whole force returning to Wusung on 23 June.
On 25 June Major-General Bartley took command of the 49th
On 8 Aug 1842, China, Nanking. Fleet arrived here and troops prepared to attack. When Chinese gave in, the war was terminated by the peace of Nanking.
The 49th sailed from there on 17 September and arrived at Chusan on 2 October.
49th once again embarked on 17 November and sailed for Hong Kong, arriving there on 22 November.
It sailed from Hong Kong on 20 December, reached Singapore on 1 January 1843 and reached Calcutta during February, from where it marched to Dum Dum
On 11 Aug 1842, India, Calcutta, Fort William. The first Division of the Regiment embarked in boats for Dinapore. With the exception of two or three casualties from drowning in consequence of carelessness and disregard of orders on the part of the sufferers, and detention to replace unserviceable boats and deficiencies in boatman, the voyage passed over prosperously till the 5 of September where they moored at a place called Sickree Gully
On 6 Sept 1842, India, Sickree Gully (At Anchor). At about 2 o'clock in the morning a violent hurricane arose, causing many of the moored boats to be swamped. Two Officers, 43 Other Ranks, six women and twelve children were lost, together with the Regiment's Colours
