On 1st April...
...1916 the 1st Royal Berkshire war diary entry reads:
The usual platoon inspections were held. Working parties on Signal trenches. 100 men carried out a "practice" dig by night, filing out through a gap in the wire. Weather:- a lovely day. Remarks The CO returned from Leave.
Each regiment maintained a Digest of Service. This was a journal which recorded events in the life of the regiment. There was no set format and the amount of detail varied between regiments. Summary information has been extracted, and is presented here, from each of the four regiments' digests run from their formation until 1914.
