Entry (Wednesday) In billets at BRAINE. Battn visited by General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien KCB Commanding 2nd Corps and also by General H Hamilton Commanding III Division. GOC II Corps made an address to as many men as could be got together on the spur of the moment and spoke in very flattering terms of the conduct of the Battn. 4th reinforcement of about 90 men under Lieut George arrived and posted. Estimated that the Battn lost in killed and wounded and missing during its occupation of N Bank (right bank) of the river AISNE about 160 all ranks. Estimated casualty returns since arrival in country with the following result up to date. Officers Killed Wounded Missing 3 9 Nil = 12 Other Ranks 37 200 125 = 362 Strength on arrival in country 1000 1000 4 Reinforcements about 90 each 360 1360 Deduct killed wounded & missing 360 1000 I find present strength of Battn is as follows With Coys 800 With HQ etc 125 Total 22 officers and 925 men The difference of about 75 rank and file is I think made up by men gone sick and otherwise have dropped out Signed T.R.
