Regiment 10th (Labour) Royal Berkshire
Location France, Rouen
Entry The Batt remained encamped in No 3 Labor Camp Rouen throughout September 1916, and was employed up to full strength available, at Petrol Depot, Base Supply Depot, and in unloading ships cargoes, but the night shifts were reduced to 200 men only earlier this month, and was discontinued on 30th Sept. The Labour of the men continued to give satisfaction. A second improvement in the Camp arrangements was effected, Huts being provided for bathing, and drying clothes, enabling the men to effect their own washing of garments: a new system of camp drainage was carried out, deep drains being dug, and pipes laid in them fashioned out of old petrol cylinders, each tent being provided with a drain filled with gravel, and connected with the main company drains by a pipe. This measure became necessary as the weather commenced to break up about Sep 15th and it became necessary on Sep 28th to move the Regimental Office, and Quartermasters office and Store Room into Huts: This drainage scheme allowed other tents (hitherto overcrowded) being aligned over a greater surface, and was carried out by the men, some 20 or 30 of whom are generally available. 2. Further progress was made, in the consolidation of the Battalion, as a Battalion, a Battalion Diagram being approved for laying out kits in tents. Company Concerts, Company (and Regimental) Foot-Ball matches being organised, Church Parades for men off duty on Sunday for which a few men are available. The marching is improving. On Sept 25th permission was obtained to obtain a worn out suit/jacket, trousers and pr boots) per man, as a Working Dress, and the necessary step taken. On Sep 21st the Transport (personnel, vehicles, and animals) was handed over to the O/C 8th Artillery Horse Transport Co, Rouen, it having been decided, that, the 1st and 2nd Line Transport of all Labour Battn's stationed at Rouen, should be taken over by the ADT and returned should the Battalion be moved to the "Front", Receipts were taken, and an acknowledgement that the animals handed over were in good condition. During the hurried mobilisation of the Battalion, two sets of Transport Animals were taken over, as the 1st Batch was not passed free from quarantine by the Vet Officer and had to be cared for by volunteers from the Battalion. At Rouen the Transport was parked in a different Camp. The general Daily Health of the Battalion is satisfactory. J H Balfour Bt LtCol Commanding 10th (L) Bn Royal Berks Regt
