Entry | 8:0AM. The Brigade Commander on reconnaissance of the Canal again ordered the patrols forward but on the left they were again unable to make progress. On the right however, a patrol succeeded in effecting a footing on the high ground overlooking the TORTILLE which proved of great value to subsequent operations. Attempts to make ground by patrols were carried on throughout the day, with the assistance of a forward 18pdr gun with varying success. In the evening however CAPT WALLS went forward and took charge of the operations and progress began to be more definite. 8:0PM. Our patrols had reached the further edge of RIVERSIDE WOOD and the enemy retired from his advanced positions in considerable numbers. 2/LIEUT GRANT was responsible for some good work at this stage, rushing a post which was holding out and killing its occupants. Further patrols pushed on in advance of RIVERSIDE WOOD and obtained contact with the enemy who were holding the line of trenches crowning the heights in strength. By this time darkness had fallen and relief by the 12th Division being in progress, the line of the Eastern edge of RIVERSIDE WOOD was definitely made good and taken over by them, while the Battalion was withdrawn in bivouacs on the FREGICOURT ROAD. "C" Coy suffered heavily from gas casualties during this relief. |
