Entry | 4:14AM. Vacated the billets in the Town and marched to positions in BRESLIE VALLEY. 6AM. Reached allotted positions in D g.d and D.15 b (Ref Map SENLIS 1/20,000). The latter move was made as orders had been received from Brigade that:- (i) In the event of an enemy retirement - The Battalion (less 2 companies) would form the Vanguard of an Advanced Guard, composed of Units of the 53rd Infantry Brigade, one troop 1/1st Northumberland Hussars, 108th A.F.A. Brigade, "A" Company 18th Batt Machine Gun Corps and Bearer Sub Division 54th Field Ambulance under the command of BRIG GENERAL M.G. BARKER DSO Commanding 53rd Brigade. (ii) The Battalion was placed at the disposal of G.O.C. 54th Brigade, its role being that of counter-attack Battalion in support of that Brigade's attack at 4.45AM 22nd August. 8AM. Orders were received from 54th Brigade for Battalion to move up to railway cutting at E.15 c 5.5. 11:30AM. Occupied positions in this area, when G.O.C. 54th Brigade ordered the Batt to move up in support of 6th BATT NORTHANTS Regt who were holding the front line in E.12 a and c. 4:30PM. Arrived in positions - "A" and "C" Companies manning trenches from E.11 c 9.9 - E.11 c 5.3 - Railway at E.17 a 9.9 - B Coy in support along Road BELLEVUE FARM - MEAULTE - D Coy in Strong Point in E.10 b - Batt Head Qrs at E.11 d 1.1. Battalion remained in these positions until 9:15PM. Battalion moved up to assembly positions in W.24 d and W.30 b preparatory to attacking the enemy's positions, the 1st objective being the Road from X.25 b 80.95 to junction with front line at W.30 b 70.35. Two companies of 7th Royal West Kents Regt were detailed to capture and hold this communication trench. Advanced Batt Hd Qrs were established at W.24 d 35.10. |
