Entry 4AM. Batt Withdrew to a position East of the CREPIGNY-DAMPCOURT road and dug in. About 9AM French and British forces were seen withdrawing on our left. Shortly afterwards orders were received to withdraw; ESSEX Regt and ROYAL BERKS Regt covering each others withdrawal. This was carried out under heavy shell fire and a position was eventually taken up on the high ground between MONDESCOURT and BABOEUF facing N.E. Considerable Machine Gun fire was brought to bear upon our position by the enemy. Four French armoured cars arrived about 12.30pm and rendered timely assistance. This position was maintained until 1.15pm and was also subjected to heavy artillery fire. At this time the enemy had advanced in considerable strength (estimated at about one Brigade) on the line GRANDRU-MONDESCOURT. The Battalion withdrew successfully and with very few casualties, owing to being covered by four French Armoured cars, previously mentioned.
