Entry 1AM. Batt marched through CAUMONT to COMMENCHON. 2:30AM. Arrived and went into temporary billets for a short rest. 8:30AM. Left village, which was being shelled rather heavily and marched back to CAILLOUEL. 9:30AM. Arrived and rested in field near village. Hot tea and bacon was served to the troops, a muster parade was held and Batt moved out in front of village taking up a position from the cross roads at F.25 b 2.8 to about F.19 c 2.0 at 11AM. With 10th ESSEX Regt on the left and a Regt of French Infantry on our right. This position was shelled intermittently from about 4pm-7pm. About dusk the trench on the right fired on our lines with machine guns causing some casualties. Lt BRAY saw the Trench Commander and explained the situation, whereupon they moved up and formed a junction with our line on the right. After dark the enemy advanced into valley in front of our position bringing up a machine gun which fired on our outposts.
