Location France, TRENCHES NIEUPORT LES BAINS
Entry In morning companies marched to COXYDE-LES-BAINS and bathed in sea. At 10pm they moved up into the trenches across YSER-CANAL east of NIEUPORT-LES-BAINS relieving the 16th NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS = 32md Division who had taken over the line from the FRENCH. Line consists of shallow trenches in sand dunes and support and front line of breastworks, revetted and sand bagged. Enemy command line from large dunes. The GREAT DUNE having the observation of practically whole of our system of trenches. Enemy artillery active during day but quiet at night relying on MG fire then. Shelling increased 80% as soon as we took over from FRENCH. No sniping though he has every opportunity of doing so. 1st BLACK WATCH on left, their left and resting on sea shore. We are right battalion with battn of 32nd division on our right, separated from us by an extensive march.
