Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, CHUIGNOLLES
Entry Relieved 1st CAMERON HIGHLANDERS in their new line of trenches lying NE of BARLEUX three companies just behind the village and one along VILLERS-CARBONNEL-ETERPIGNY road. At 4am of 19th the battn received orders to cross the river SOMME at dawn. However on arriving on the bank of the river at ETERPIGNY it was found that the bridge which was being constructed by FIELD COY RE was not even approaching completion though supposed to be ready for troops at dawn, and as no other bridge existed in the immediate vicinity, the battalion was forced to wait. Battalion Scouts however, crossed the river at BRIE and reconnoitred enemy trenches as far as enemy's 3rd line of defence namely BERNDORF-NASSAU trenches and outskirts of MESNIL-BRUNTEL all of which had been evacuated, the patrol meeting with no resistance, and later in the day the battalion occupied these lines.
