Regiment | 8th Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, WARLOY |
Entry | 24.1.17-31.1.17. Training was carried out during this period, very strenuously. The minimum time devoted each day being 5 hours. The work of the day usually commenced with running drill, followed by a short route march and tactical operations. The way in which the men had smartened themselves up was a very noticeable feature during the period under review, the discipline of the Battalion being maintained at a high standard. The percentage of sick at this time was rather high, it being considered due to (a) the intense cold (b) the poor physique of the men (c) poor billets (d) lack of fuel (e) the quality of the food not being so good as it had been. A colder period than this had not been experienced by the Battalion before, either at Home or in France. LIEUT H.C. CHURCHILL and 2nd LIEUT F.K. WEEDON rejoined the Battalion from England 9.1.17. 2nd LIEUT A.W. MORLAND joined the Battalion 15.1.17. 2nd LIEUT H.B.F. KENNEY joined the Battalion 24.1.17. 2nd LIEUT E. WALLIS joined the Battalion 25.1.17 (from the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regt). No reinforcements above the strength of 20 were received during the month, the only drafts being 48 OR who rejoined the Battalion from No 46 Infantry Base Depot. The following Officers W.O. and N.C.O. were mentioned in the list of New Year's Honours. Military Cross. Temp Captain J.H.G. Lawrence. Temp 2nd Lieut G.F. Marsh. Mentioned in Dispatches. Temp Lieut Colonel C.F.N. Bartlett. 10001 a/B.S.M. C. Brown. 14950 Lce Cpl T.H.A. Smart. |
