War Diary

1916-12-09
Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, BAZENTIN
Entry Battalion moved up to front line trenches of Left Sector of Divisional Front between M.17d 1/2 7 1/2 and M.18C 3.0 (see attached map) and relieved the 1st Black Watch. Front Line 9.12.16-13.12.16. During the four days we held the front line the weather was extremely bad. It rained or snowed everyday and each day, in spite of the efforts to keep the trenches open and clean, the mud became worse. The front line of the left Company was only a series of posts in consolidated shell holes joined together by a wide ditch which rapidly filled with water. In this part the mud in places reached nearly to one's waist. Between the two Companies there was an unoccupied piece of front of a distance of about 200 yards. This part was marked by a tape to prevent men from wandering over the front line. The communication trenches became impassable and all parties had to go over the open. Any man who got into a communication trench was certain to get stuck and would probably have to be dug out. There were two Companies in the front line and the two supporting Companies lived in the cellars of EAUCOURT L'ABBAY.
