War Diary

1916-09-26
Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND
Entry 20.9.16 to 26.9.16. During this period those Companies of the Battalion who were not actually in the front line were employed on carrying of ammunition, bombs, stores etc from BAZENTIN to the front line. Owing to the very muddy condition of the ground caused by rain this work became very hard, messages, as no communication trenches then existed between "WORCESTER TRENCH" (British front line before September 15th) and the new front line the men had to go across the open under shell fire. The Battalion did much in helping with the consolidation of the new position, in digging a new communication trench and in marking out a track across country with white posts. The carrying parties did excellent work and earned the thanks of the G.O.C. 3rd Brigade, who was then in Command of the Brigade holding the front line. 4:0PM. Battalion was relieved in BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND by 19th London Regiment - 141th Brigade 47th Division. On relief the Battalion marched to BRESLE and went into billets.
