War Diary

1916-09-19
Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, BECOURT WOOD.
Entry 4:0PM. Battalion left BECOURT WOOD and moved to BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND ready to relive units of 140th and 142nd Brigades - 47th Division - in their new front line - STARFISH LINE - N.E. of HIGH WOOD. The 1st Black Watch were to have relieved units of 140th and 142nd Brigades in COUGH DROP trenches. On arrival of the Berks and Black Watch at BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND the two Battalions were told to stand by and not to continue with the relief as the enemy has succeeded in driving the NEW ZEALANDERS - on right of 47th Division - out of part of FLERS LINE and had entered "DROP LANE" and penetrated along the front line as far as "The COUGH DROP" - thus occupying most of the trenches which the Black Watch had been ordered to take over. At midnight the Black Watch moved up to take over the "STAR FISH LINE" which should have been taken over by Berks and the Berks remained in BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND.
