Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, CONTAL MAISON
Entry 9:30PM. Battalion moved into support of 10th Glosters and 1st Cameron Highlanders who were to attack the enemy's temporary line = switch line = in front of MARTINPUICH. 1 Company was placed at the disposal of O.C. 10th Glosters and one Company at disposal of O.C. 1st Camerons. These two Companies took up position the first in O.G.I. And the second in rear of BAZENTIN-LE-PETIT WOOD with orders to remain echeloned on the Camerons right and to fill up any gap which might occur between the right of the 1st Division and the left of the 19th Division who were operating on our right. The remaining two Companies took up position in the trench running along the sunken road between "The CUTTING" and MAMETZ WOOD. Battalion HQ moved to LOWER WOOD. The attack was timed to commence at 12.30am. (For Orders and details of the attack see APPENDIX IV). LOWER WOOD. The two assaulting Battalions failed to enter the enemy's trench chiefly owing to the fact that the trench was on the reverse slope of a ridge and that the artillery had been able to get no direct observation on to the trench and so the wire had not been sufficiently cut. The two Battalions had fairly heavy casualties and at 4.15am our two remaining Companies in support in "The CUTTING" were moved up into O.G.I.; one Company in support of each Battalion.
