Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, LOZENGE WOOD (FRICOURT)
Entry 9:0AM. 2nd Lieut F.S. SNELL was killed whilst reconnoitring road from LOZENGE WOOD to CONTAL MAISON. 9:15PM. The Battalion moved out of trenches near LOZENGE WOOD and relieved the remainder of 8th YORKS Regt who had attacked and captured CONTAL MAISON the previous night. They had established themselves on the Eastern edge of the village and were occupying two trenches in the grounds of the CHATEAU (see map). The 1st Battalion Black Watch took over from 9th Yorks Regt on our left. Our Battn HQ was in the cellar of a ruined house just behind the CHATEAU. The large cellars of the CHAREAU were discovered to be full of German wounded = about 110 = who were being attended to by a German doctor who himself had been slightly wounded in the hand. Some of these wounded had been in the CHATEAU since the commencement of the fighting on July 1st and their wounds were in an advanced septic condition and their suffering was appalling. The German doctor said that during the fighting at CONTAL MAISON he had been captured and recaptured no less than three times. CONTAL MAISON: 10:30PM. We had been ordered to capture and occupy "THE CUTTING" before morning. After questioning some of the prisoners in the CHATEAU who assured us that "THE CUTTING" was occupied, a fighting patrol was sent out to capture the point but was driven back by machine gun fire.
