War Diary

1916-05-18
Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, LES BREBIS
Entry 3:0PM. 2nd Lt W.L. CLARKE and 2nd Lt E.S. JOY joined the Battalion from England. 6:0PM. The Battalion relieved the 17th Middlesex Battalion in the CALONNE Section - CALONNE NORD subsection -. The Battalion had never been so far south as this before but the 1st Corps having extended its front Southwards taking over the CALONNE Section from the IVth Corps, the 1st Division was ordered to relieve the 2nd Division in this section. The trenches had been made by the French and were not so deep as our own usually are, moreover, they were revetted by loose wooden props obtained from the mine pit near by, this revetment made it impossible for us to deepen the trenches further for fear of undermining the wood work. The front line trench just skirts the Eastern edge of the village of CALONNE, indeed, in one place it actually ran through the cellars of two houses. This peculiar position of the front line brought about an extraordinary situation in that the Company Headquarters and some of the men who garrisoned the front line were able to live in cellars during the day. (a map of the CALONNE SECTION is attached).
