Regiment | 8th Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, Front Line Trenches |
Entry | 7:30AM. The Battalion was relieved by the 10th GLOSTERS. MAROC. 11:0AM. The Battalion went into support billets. During this tour in the trenches heavy snow proved a difficult factor with which to contend. As soon as the thaw set in, the friable soil brought the trench -walls down - often twice or thrice a day. It was only by the very hardest work that the trenches were kept clear, and the unboarded portions completed. The work was very satisfactorily performed, and earned the personal praise of our Brigadier. There was a good deal of Artillery activity on each side; wiring parties, and patrols, went out each evening and accomplished useful work. During the day, the left hand platoon had to be withdrawn to a supporting trench, on account of trench mortars sent over continually by the enemy. On the first morning of this tour we sustained three casualties, two men being killed, and one wounded so seriously that he died the next day. Curiously enough, all wore steel helmets, and all were hit in the head. During the month the Division was transferred from the 4th to the 1st Corps. There were the following casualties during February: Other ranks: Killed 2 Died of wounds 1 Wounded 3 6 |
