| Entry | IV Corps Order: On the 1st Division going into Reserve, the Corps Commander wishes to take the opportunity of expressing his appreciation of the excellent work which the Division has done during its two months in the Left Sector. The organization of the allotment of the work of the Divisional Commander and his staff and by the Brigade Commanders and their staff has been of a high order, while the execution of the work by all ranks shows the fine spirit that pervades the Division. The task was no light one and the men of the 1st Division who, by their determination and cheerfulness, overcame such difficulties have every reason to be proud of the results. (4th Corps No. 1411 G, d 12.1.16. The Major-General Commanding, on the Division going back into the training area, wishes to place on record his appreciation of the good work done by all ranks during the two months they have been in the line. The trenches by continuous and organized work have been boarded throughout and the defensive capability of the line has been very materially increased by the addition of several extra lines of trenches. The building of these additional lines whilst maintaining the original trenches during exceptional bad weather has necessitated very heavy calls on the endurance of the men, and these calls have been answered in the cheerful and disciplined spirit which invariably characterise the units of the 1st Division. The G.O.C. has also noticed with great satisfaction the amount of good work which had been done by the Regimental Transport in preparing horse standings those made by the units of the 1st Division compare most favourably with those of any other division.
