Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, GERMAN 3rd Line (Reserve Trench) between HULLUCK and LOOS
Entry 4:45AM. Stood to. The men were so exhausted that it was difficult to keep the sentries on the alert. 9:0AM. The Commanding Officer - Col W.C. Walton - having received his orders left the trench to proceed to ADEN on duty, where he was to take over the command of a mobile force. It was not without tears in his eyes that he said goodbye to his Officers and one could see that it hurt him greatly to leave his Battalion especially under such conditions and at such a time. Major C.F.N. Bartlett assumed command of the Battalion. The remainder of the day was spent in consolidating the position. 11.10PM. Our Battalion was relieved by a company of the 1st GLOUCESTER Regt and we went back to the English Old front line trench at Y1.
