War Diary

1915-09-27
Regiment 8th Royal Berkshire
Location France, GERMAN 3rd Line (Reserve Trench) between HULLUCK and LOOS
Entry 4:45AM. Stood to. The enemy had been quiet all night. 9:0AM. The Ration party which had been sent to LE RUTOIRE the day before lost its way and so we had no water or rations for this day. 10AM. The two remaining Officers who had been left with the 1st line transport rejoined the Battalion and one immediately organized a party to go back and get water. It had been impossible until now to send an Officer with the ration parties owing firstly to the scarcity of Officers and secondly that their services were far too valuable in the trenches just then. 4.0PM. The GUARDS made an attack on HILL 70 and the CHALK PIT which the 2nd Brigade had failed to take the day before. All along our front we threw out smoke bombs and so protected their left flank from enfilade fire. As far as we could see this attack was successful.
