Entry Work as yesterday. Enemy artillery between 1000-1100 hours placed 30 light shells in MACUKOVO, 42 rounds 105mm on M4 and M5 trenches and camp. 1300-1630 hours about 60 rounds 105mm HE in BATES RAVINE. 117 rounds in vicinity of M3 and M5. 2130 10 rounds 105mm between M3 and M5. An enemy party who had apparently crawled under our outpost wire during the night surprised the post (VAN 6) at 0700, attacking it from the rear, wounded 2 ORS and captured the remainder of the post (1 OR). A telephone message from VAN 6 was received at M2 at 0702 hours that post was being attacked. Immediately at party consisting of 2Lt SKIERMAN and 6 ORS, left M2 to give assistance, but on arriving at post found both signallers had been wounded, and were practically unconscious. The enemy had cleared, apparently taking with them the remainder of the post. The surrounding wire and ground in vicinity was investigated. No gaps in the wire could be found but along MACUKOVO RAVINE our wire was trodden down. This was evidently the way the enemy returned to his line. Condition of ground suggested that our men had been dragged along. The post was re-established at once. Patrol of 1 Officer (2Lt CHIULDS 20 ORS and 1 L Gun det left VAN 10 at 2100 hours to ascertain enemy movement and see if enemy working on PITON de L'EGLISE, engage enemy patrol if found and kill or capture prisoners. Patrol proceeded to W slope of L'EGLISE and lay up. Nothing was seen or heard of enemy, so patrol moved over crest of hill, and reconnoitred N slope of hill, returning via E slope. No enemy trench work was discovered. Patrol then moved towards PITON des QUATRE ARBRES on crossing sunken road were heavily fired upon from QUATRE ARBRES and E of the hill. Patrol pushed forward Rifle grenadiers who fired of 15 grenades on crest of QUATRE ARBRES, and rear slopes of hill. The enemy then attempted to work round flank of patrol. Rifle grenades continued firing until all grenades had been used up. Enemy then brought down his barrage at intervals on L'EGLISE, MACUKOVO and along banks of VARDAR, and patrol withdrew returning via VAN 10. B Coy relieved A Coy in Right sector. A Coy moving back to reserve camp MM8. Lt MINTY proceeded on leave to UK. Remarks. 11 OR rejoined, 3 OR sick to hospital, 2 OR wounded to hospital, 1 since died, 3 OR reported missing believed prisoners of war, 19 ORS proceeded on leave to UK.
