Entry Work carried on as yesterday in camps, trenches and wiring M8. Enemy artillery. At 0025 hours placed 8 rounds H.E. on the track between VAN 8 and our front line trenches. Later putting 38 rounds 105MM behind M4 and M5 1050 hours placed 9 rounds 105MM H.E. on M2 and M4. Between 1610-1810 hours enemy shelled MACUKOVO placed 10 rounds in front of wire on VAN 10, 18 rounds on M2 and behind M4. Trench Mortars registered BANGOR RAVINE. Patrol of 3 Officers (2/Lt A.V. SHILLCOCK MC, BERRY and MITCHELL) 28 ORS and L Gun detachment left VAN 10 at 0200 hours to reconnoitre MACUKOVO. 2Lt SHILLCOCK and 12 OR to remain in VILLAGE during day. VILLAGE and obtained sample of water from fountain in MACUKOVO. They did no encounter any enemy. 2Lt SHILLCOCK and 12 Scouts lay up in VILLAGE to watch for enemy movements. Nothing happened until 1530 hours a when patrol moved forward and found that enemy had erected 2 belts of concentrated wire and one belt of barbed wire running from pt 11205/17705 in a westerly direction. While endeavouring to crawl through this wire patrol was fired on by enemy, who suddenly appeared from the orchard. Patrol retaliated. One of the enemy was seen to fall, the remainder bolted. Patrol endeavoured to get at the man who was fallen but were forced to withdraw owing to enemy barrage coming down. Patrol remained under cover in VILLAGE until dark then returned to our trenches via VAN 10.
