Entry | Work as yesterday. Enemy artillery. Retaliated to our artillery bombardment with 77mm and 105mm. Trench Mortars registered barrage BANGOR RAVINE at 0500 hrs. At 1055 hours 4 men were observed walking along the bank of VARDAR toward PITON DES QUATRE ARBRES. They were lost to view at pt 11140/17722. Patrol of 1 Officer 2Lt CHILDS and 20 ORS L Gun detachment left M3 at 2000 hours to reconnoitre PITON DES QUATRE ARBRES and valley E of the hill. Patrol reached PITON DE L'EGLISE and found that a large grass fire had been started evidently caused by our artillery, in the ORCHARD N of PITON DES QUATRE ARBRES. Patrol lay up at this point and watched the flames rush over PITON DES QUATRE ARBRES. It was found impossible to proceed further. Patrol returned without further incident at 2145 hours. This fire eventually reached the edge of our outpost position VAN 10 but no damage was done. |
