Entry Work continued as yesterday. A demonstration of Hammenwerfer was given by the Divisional Gas Officer on the Brigade Firing Range 300 yds south of Brigade Hd Qrs at 0900 hrs. One Officer and 20 ORS from each Coy attended Three enemy aeroplanes flew over our lines (M Sector) during the morning and enemy observation balloon was up during the day at GJAVATO. A patrol of 1 Officer and 20 ORS (Batt Scouts) with a Lewis Gun, left our lines at 2030 hrs and proceeded to CHAPEAU DE GENDARME with the object of killing or capturing enemy post there. Nine Bulgars were clearly seen on the skyline and fire was opened upon them with Lewis Gun and rifles, and then patrol charged. The enemy fled and it was noticed that one man was being carried. Our artillery at the same time, had a shoot on, and the Bulgar replied by putting down Trench Mortar Barrages and artillery Barrages as though he expected an attack. Our patrol was prevented giving further chase to the enemy owing to the barrage. The enemy put down barrages on and between GRAND PITON and CHAPEAU DE GENDARME and on Y and CHAPEAU RAVINES (Trench Mortar) and also artillery barrages on GRAND PITON, CHAPEAU DE GENDARME, DOUBLE HILL, AL4, L8.
