Entry | Work as usual. Night working parties continued to work on new outpost line. Enemy artillery inactive during the day on this sector, but again shelled our O.P. at MAMELON DE CHEMIN DE FER. A patrol of 1 Officer (2Lt A.V. SHILLCOCK) and Batt Scouts left our lines at 2100 and proceeded to pt. 1114/17680. PITON DE L'EGLISE was reached at 0030 hrs. Rifle fire and Trench Mortar bursts were heard in the direction of CHAPEAU DE GENDARME. (It was afterwards reported that the Bat on the Right had sent a patrol which had encountered the enemy near CHAPEAU DE GENDARME. Shots were later fired from PITON DES 4 ARBRES and 2/Lt SHILLCOCK called down a barrage from our Battery (B57) on the hill, by signalling back to our trenches with electric torch. No further incident occurred during the night. Remarks. 4 ORS. |
