War Diary

1918-06-09
Regiment 7th Royal Berkshire
Location Greece, M Sector
Entry No work as it was Sunday. Between 1145 hrs and 1230 hrs enemy artillery shelled our line, right of M4. We called upon our own artillery to retaliate and the howitzers of D57 Battery replied by shelling BLUE RAVINE and 18pds of B57 Battery shelled the DOME (SMOL map 1/20000). Enemy artillery then ceased. During the evening enemy artillery fired 6 rounds on MM2 and during the night about 2200 hrs, fired 25 rounds near new outpost position No. 5 (ONE TREE HILL). During the evening enemy machine guns from JUMEAU, fire several bursts on Right Batt's front on DOUBLE HILL. A patrol of 1 Officer (2/Lt G.I. BERRY) and 25 ORS (D Coy), between the hours of 2300 and 0230, lay up at approx pt 1115/1766 - PITON DE L'EGLISE to wait for enemy patrols. No hostile patrols appeared, and patrol returned to our own lines without incident. The enemy seems to be working very hard on his trenches especially on the DOME, where much damage was done by our artillery bombardment. During the night between 2000 and 2020 hrs prolonged shouting and cheering has been heard apparently from large bodies of the enemy beyond his main line. Remarks. 1 OR to hospital (sick).
