Entry Work as usual. Enemy artillery fired small bursts at intervals along whole front. 6 105mm were fired at M2, 15 105mm on SMOL HILL or in that neighbourhood, 11 105mm on SMOL - M8 road. Enemy trench mortars registered the W slope of PITON DES MITRAILLEUSES at about 0555 hrs. Enemy machine guns fired at our planes from direction of PITON DES MITRAILLEUSES and THE DOME. Enemy has been working upon his trenches apparently repairing damage caused by our artillery on the night 29th/30th April. 2/Lt SHILLCOCK and Batt Scouts patrolled to PITON des 4 ARBRES with object of capturing or killing enemy post or patrol. Three parties of the enemy each about 20 strong were met and engaged with rifle fire and bombs, and driven off, severe casualties being inflicted on the enemy. A party which endeavoured to outflank our patrol was driven off with rifle grenade fire. 2Lt SHILLCOCK skilfully handled his patrol and brought all his men back to our lines though 7 were slightly wounded by bombs. It is estimated that enemy dead and wounded numbered not less than 25. Remarks. 7 ORS to hospital sick, 2ORS to hospital wounded, 7 ORS to 78th M.G. Coy, 13 ORS struck off strength scheme base.
