Entry Patrol under LT ROGERS with 2LT DIXON and 37 OR left M8 2330 hrs (30th) to reconnoitre PITON des QUATRES ARBRES. PITON de L'EGLISE was unoccupied but on advancing towards PITON des 4 ARBRES at 0125 hrs patrol was fired on by enemy to the number of 60 to 80 from sunken road about 300x S of the PITON. Enemy had two Trench Mortars. Our patrol opened rapid fire. One trench mortar was silenced by rifle grenades only firing 4 shots. The second was silenced by rapid fire. After twenty minutes enemy retired. Our patrol advanced 20 yards - but halted for lack of ammunition. Enemy barrage then opened and our patrol withdrew in good order followed by enemy barrage to ONE TREE HILL. Patrol entered our trenches 0230 hrs. Batt was relieved by 9th GLOSTER REGT in M Sector - D Coy 8th Oxford and Bucks Lt Infty also being relieved. B Coy remained in MORGAN GOLLY. 2LT S.C. BRIGLAND to hospital sick. Remarks. 7 OR to hospital sick, 1 armourer Sgt joined.
