Entry Two patrols of 50 under Captain ELDRIDGE and Lt RAVENSHEAR went out at 2400 hrs under instruction received to raid enemy trenches on small hill named MAMELON. Lt RAVENSHEAR on the left after passing DOLDZELI village was heavily fired on, and enfiladed was forced to retire. Captain ELDRIDGE'S patrol returned in good order with only slight casualties. Total casualties 21 OR wounded. At 0545 hours enemy were observed moving on MAMELON. Quiet day ensued. About 1930hrs a remarkably heavy thunderstorm broke and continued for some 1 1/2hrs. At 2100hrs enemy strength 200 to 300 attacked left sector C4 to Y. In some cases he reached our wire but artillery barrage was opened and he was driven off by rifle and machine gun fire. About 2030hrs enemy in number about 60 attacked right sector up the VLADAJA RAVINE but was driven off. A second attack on the left was driven off successfully and by 2300 hrs everything was quiet. Casualties 2 killed 10 wounded. The 9th GLOUCESTERS who were waiting behind the line to relieve the Battn had casualties as follows - 3 OR wounded, 1 mule killed. Remarks, 4 OR to hospital sick.
