Entry Orders received to hand over front line from GROVE ALLEY to N.20.d.1.o. by 2.40a.m. to 9th ESSEX Regt who were ordered to attack BAYONET Trench at 3.40am. This Bn was in support and was ordered to take over the front line as soon as the Essex advanced to the assault. At 3.40am the assault was launched and at 5am it was known that the attack had not been successful. The Brigadier issued orders that our right Company should move round through the Bde on our right and support the attacking Battalion from the Right Flank. As it was then almost light the movement was not executed and by 8am all the 9th Essex Regt were back in their original trenches. Meanwhile the Brigade on our Right the 88th Bde had taken their objective. Casualties:- 4 o.r. wounded.
