Regiment 5th Royal Berkshire
Location France, H 2 Sector trenches nr Arras
Entry On night of 25th - 26th a second attempt was made to raid the same place. The lane cut in enemy wire had been kept open and a second torpedo was successfully got into position and fired destroying the remainder of the wire. Under cover of overhead Machine Gun fire, the Raiding Party passed through the gap but found themselves in a crater with the enemy's parapet in front and barbed wire on top of it. They found no sign of enemy, so lay up hoping to catch an enemy patrol. They were eventually fired on and 2Lt A.W. TAYLOR was killed. The party then withdrew from the enemy line losing more casualties in the process. Herewith sketch showing position. [next page shows sketch] 2Lt A.W. TAYLOR conducted both parties with great skill and gallantry until he was killed and 2Lt R. COBB besides lending him valuable assistance made a brave attempt to remove his body. No. 9376 L/Cpl A. COX was responsible on both occasions for directive and firing the torpedo, and showed the greatest courage and resource in twice getting it into exactly the required position undetected and in reconnoitring the wire before and after the torpedo. Casualties:- Killed 2Lt A.W. TAYLOR - Wounded 4 other ranks. Missing 4 other ranks.
