Entry | 1a.m. On their return journey several Whiz Bangs came over and burst close to them near junction of Upper Cut and Scottish Trench Lieut J.S.W. Bath who was with them was killed. Col Foley had his right jaw broken and Lt Col Shaw was thrown down but was not hurt. Lt Col Foley walked back to Dressing Station and then on to Field Ambulance. 11a.m. Village Line Inspected by Corps Commander Lieut General Gough. 12.30 Conference of C.O's and Brig Genl re Gas Operation in Evening. During the morning a rifle Grenade fell on a Gas cylinder cracking it this caused the gas to leak and 8 men were poisoned . 3 men shock and 5 wounded. Special Instructions were issued with reference to gas operations at 9p.m. Bombers in Saps had to wear their Smoke Helmets. The gas was discharged at 9p.m. The Germans at once fired Red Rockets for Artillery fire and also started bonfires on their Frontline trenches. Their Artillery opened fire at 9.15p.m. Our Artillery was not due to begin firing till 9.20p.m. In the meantime Trench Mortars and Machine Guns opened fire. The wires to A and B Coy were soon cut and also to C Coy and Prince Street. 10.30p.m. Enemys Artillery ceased. Runners at once went out to companies and the Telephone Linesmen went out and repaired lines. Communication soon re-established. The work of these men was very good. Midnight Enemy's Artillery began again and fired for about 40 minutes. |
