Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location Egypt, Sidi Bishr
Entry The original Peace Processional Party having been detailed for the Fireworks Display another party were hastily got together and at 0830 were conveyed in a lorry to the forming-up space by the French Consulate in Alexandria. The procession was composed of (besides the detachments from the British units in the vicinity of the town) Armenian Boy Scouts, French Brothers, Catholic Priests, demobilised French Soldiers. A start was made at 1000, a squadron of planes stunting overhead and coming to within 20 ft of the ground. The route taken was through Mohamed Ali Square up the Sharia Sherif Pasha, along Rue Rosette to the Municipal Buildings. To quote from the Egyptian Gazette "The scene in Shefif Pasha will never be forgotten. Flowers rained down upon the heads of the men who had fought so long and stubbornly to save the world from tyranny (?)…….kisses were showered down from many a packed balcony of Alexandria's most graceful and fair". At the Municipal Buildings the procession broke up, and the lorry being at hand the party embussed, and returned to Camp. In the evening the majority of the Battalion were on pass in Alexandria and the evening passed off without any serious disturbance between the natives and the troops.
