War Diary

1918-05-09
Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Robecq
Entry Fairly quiet. At 8.45am and 10.30am 5 rounds of 5.9's were directed against Battalion Headquarters at GLOSTER FARM. Three direct hits were made, killing 2 and wounding 7 Other Ranks. Bn HQ was moved to GARVIN. Enemy Aircraft were rather active and crossed our lines several times during the day. 2 Balloons were up. At 9.30pm our Reserve Company moved forward into their Battle positions and were withdrawn at dawn. Enemy Artillery shelled our back areas intermittently during the night, and at 10.30pm our heavies opened a strong bombardment on QUENTIN and PACAUT. Patrols were sent out from both front line companies. Lieut THORN'S Patrol bombed an endgame MG, causing at least 3 Casualties and the withdrawal of the gun. Unfortunately they were unable to secure identifications owing to flanking fire from the enemy.
