Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Trenches
Entry RIGHT SUB SECTOR OPPOSITE ST QUENTIN. Weather bright and sunny with a light breeze - Visibility very good. The enemy fired about 20 rounds 5.9" on to our front line apparently ranging on the cross junction of two communication trenches. During the afternoon the Commanding Officer and Intelligence Officer observed NO MAN'S LAND for an hour from a post in the Front Line. The ground at the NE end of CAMEL VALLEY and the ridge beyond were carefully studied. Enemy guiding marks leading from his front line just North of ST QUENTIN to one of our front line posts were noticed. These marks consisted of small chalk patches at about 50 yards interval, other patches and holes similar but not quite the same in appearance had been scattered among them. Patrol Orders were issued for Two wire patrols and one fighting patrol consisting of Two Officers and 31 other ranks. The Intelligence Officer accompanied this patrol, the object of which was to ascertain if the reverse slope of the ridge beyond CAMEL VALLEY was occupied by the enemy, and to attack him if that proved to be the case. When the position was reached no enemy was found there although the place showed signs of occupation. The enemy had the spot well covered by machine guns and rifles, which occasionally opened a lively fire. Operation Orders f or the relief of the Battalion by the 2/1 BUCKS BATTALION on the 11 were issued.
