Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Pontruet Gricourt Sector
Entry During the night a patrol under Lieut HINCHLIFFE went out from PONTRUET and ascertained that the trench opposite that village (Trench FOURMI) was unoccupied. An Advance party as detailed in orders went forwarded under Lieut JEWELL MC to arrange billets. After a quiet day the relief of the Battalion by the 2/7th ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGIMENT commenced at dusk. As soon as they were relieved Companies marched back separately to MARTEVILLE where a halt was made for a hot meal to be served from the cookers. Relief was reported complete at 8.30pm having been successfully carried through without incident. After each Company had rested for a short time at MARTEVILLE it preceded to march back to billets in GERMAINE. In spite of the long and tiring march the men were in good spirits. The last Company arrived in billets at about 2am. As each Company marched into the village it was met by Lieut-Col J H S Dimmer VC MC who had just returned from leave and who again took over the command of the Battalion.
