Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Pontgruet-Gricourt Sector
Entry During the night another Officer's patrol under 2/Lieut STEVENS reconnoitred PONTRUET but found no signs of the enemy. Wire patrols were sent out again all along the Front Line, but the night passed without incident. Enemy artillery was rather more active during the day. Orders for the relief of the Battalion by the 2/1 BUCKS on the night of 18/19th were received during the day. At 6pm a Patrol under 2/Lieut WATSON went out from our Right Coy front. They found traces of enemy patrol routes and were fired upon from the SUNKEN ROAD in front of the Right Coy. At 10.45pm a report came in from a Wire Patrol on the left that a large patrol of the enemy had been seen working down the OMIGNON VALLEY. Fire was opened by our posts in this neighbourhood. The artillery were also communicated with and opened fire with shrapnel over the valley. Nothing more was heard of the enemy patrol. Orders for the relief of the Battalion by the 2/1 BUCKS were issued.
