War Diary

1918-01-15
Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Pontgruet-Gricourt Sector
Entry During the night two reconnaissance patrols were sent out. 1. To reconnoitre PONTRUET. 2. To examine wire. The first patrol under 2/Lieut L E C CLARK discovered and dispersed a small enemy patrol in PONTRUET. The second found the wire in front of our right posts to be in quite good condition. Soon after 7am one of the enemy was observed wandering a few hundred yards from our wire about the centre of our sector. Corporal BIRD and two men went out and captured him. He belonged to 394 IR (2006 Div) (Normal). Remainder of the night and day was extremely quiet with little or not activity on either side. The front held is some 2,000 yards long is held by advanced posts. Trenches are in an extremely bad condition being un-revetted, with no trench boards. The recent thaw and rain have caused them to collapse making a large amount of labour absolutely necessary
