War Diary

1917-12-18
Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Front Line
Entry FRONT LINE VILLERS-PLOUICH AREA. The weather was still cold but fine with less wind. No activity of importance took place but from 11am to 12 noon light shelling of our support trenches took place and No 34150 Pte Abbot G of "A" Coy was killed. There was much less individual enemy movement in front of our lines today probably due to our constant sniping. The Bucks Battalion of 184 Bde supplied a working party at night for the improvement of Forward and communication trenches. "A" Coy relieved "B" Coy at night in Forward Trench, "B" moving into support. Two Reconnaissance Patrols went out during the night:- 1. From "C" Coy to ascertain if enemy had a post at the junction of FOSTER TRENCH and the Road. No position was located here but two other enemy positions were located in FOSTER TRENCH and also one advanced Machine Gun position. 2. "D" Coy sent out the other patrol to find out if enemy held JAM SAP and the Derelict Tank and if he had constructed a continuation of JAM SAP. The patrol brought back the information that JAM SAP was held but that the Tank was NOT and that no new continuation of JAM SAP existed.
