War Diary

1917-12-17
Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Front Line
Entry FRONT LINE VILLERS-PLOUICH AREA. The night of the 16/17th was cold, some snow fell and there was a light dry wind. "B" Coy in Forward trench were rather exposed, the trench being new dug, shallow and without shelters. The situation was very quiet all day, small bodies of the enemy moved in the open at intervals but were rapidly dispersed by our fire. The enemy shelled the head of Farm Ravine between 7.30pm and 8.0pm. During the night "D" Coy sent out a reconnaissance patrol to ascertain if the enemy had a listening post in front of "D" Coys position, by a derelict tank, but they found on examination no signs indicating that the enemy held such a position. Communication trenches were commenced during the night. (a) From Forward to "B" and "C" Coy HQ, thence to GAME SUPPORT. (B) From Syme Avenue to some shelters for the men of "C" Coy.
