War Diary

1917-12-08
Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Villers Plouich
Entry Battn relief commenced at 12 midnight and last of Battn reached Reserve Bn Shelters in VILLERS PLOUICH at 8am. A thaw had set in and rain fell, so the trenches quickly became filled with mud and ooze - progress very difficult. All ranks utterly exhausted, having been without sleep practically since 29th Nov. The Battn was quartered in one large dug out and several shelters in VILLERS-PLOUICH east of the railway. The village and approaches were shelled intermittently day and night. The day was spent in resting and cleaning. Several dead being noticed, the Battn area was searched and all dead located with a view to burial. During the evening parties carried RE material to the line.
