Entry | A patrol under 2Lieut ROBINSON "C" Coy of 20 men went out to endeavour to enter the enemy trench. He succeeded in entering the enemy's trench South of the road at about 3.30am and reported it unoccupied. One platoon of "C" Coy and two platoons of "A" Coy were then sent forward to assist the consolidation and digging of posts. Patrols with Lewis Guns pushed forward and 2 "Z" posts practically dug in by 6am. "A" Coy's 2 platoons were then withdrawn and remainder of C Coy sent up. 2Lt WILLMOTT "D" Coy with 20 men went out with same object as the above patrol. He succeeded in entering the enemy's trench and found it unoccupied. One platoon of D Coy was then sent forward to consolidate. Patrols with Lewis Guns pushed forward and constructed "Z" posts and the remainder of D Coy consolidated. Communication with left (BUCKS) was obtained soon after . A patrol under Capt Preston "C" Coy reconnoitred as far as TUMULUS in M1d (Sheet 62B) by 7.30 and found it unoccupied, but was forced to relieve at 10am by a party of the enemy estimated 200 Rifles who were trying to encircle the TUMLULUS. 2Lieut ROBINSON "C" Coy took out a patrol to reconnoitre MAREVAL COPSE at 6am and found it unoccupied. Thereafter 1 platoon was sent forward to hold it. A patrol under 2Lt BRAID went forward to reconnoitre village of PONTRU. No enemy were found in this village. Two sections of "C" Coy went forward and occupied the village. From PONTRU Sgt Shephard (C Coy) reconnoitred towards R OMIGNON along PONTUR-BERTHAUCOURT road with object of gaining touch with Brigade on Right. He crossed the river into BERTHAUCOURT and found no enemy there but failed to get into communication with RIGHT Brigade S of River. During the time of C and D Coys entering the enemy trenches "A" Coy moved to VADENCOURT-CHATEAU and "B" Coy moved to BIHECOURT. At 8pm 2Lieut MULLINS and 1 platoon "A" Coy were sent forward to hold PONTRU. The remainder of "A" Coy (Capt Willink) were then engaged in assisting remainder of C and D Coys and wiring of line of resistance (the old German line) until early morning of 10th inst. |
