Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Vermand
Entry Our artillery again paid attention to cutting the wire. The day was comparatively quiet. The enemy fired a few 77mm and 4.2 shells into "D" Coy posts with no result. At night patrol of 10 men went out at 9pm under 2Lieut CARTER "C" Coy to reconnoitre wire and ascertain if trench N of BIHECOURT-BELLENGLISE Rd was still held. He reported wire still uncut and only slightly damaged by artillery fire and trench still held. 2Lieut WHITFIELD D Coy took out a patrol of 10 men at same time as 2Lieut CARTER with the same object S of the road. He confirmed the trench was held and the wire untouched. It had been reported during the day that one or two of the enemy were seen with packs on in the trench, so very close observation and patrolling was kept up. On the return of above patrols, further ones were immediately sent out. Shell Shock 1 OR.
