Regiment 2/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Vermand
Entry Unfortunately the attack was held up by wire. Three attempts were made without success. Orders were then given to OC 2/5 GLOSTERS by GOC 184 Infy Bde to hold the line we held previous to the attack, which 2 platoons of D Coy were now holding. Orders then reached the Battn to be in readiness to relieve 2/5th Gloucesters by "dawn". At 2.30am the Battn commenced to relieve the 2/5 GLOSTERS on line E of VADENCOURT CHATEAU. "C" Coy (Capt Whitaker) taking over the posts South of VERMAND - BELLENGLISE Road from 13 platoon D Coy, and D Coy (Capt Reeves) took over posts N of this road. "A" Coy (Capt Willenk) went into "Support" at BIHECOURT. "B" Coy (Capt Allen) in "Reserve" in the Railway cutting. R21a2.8 (Sheet 62c). The day was quiet on the whole. Own artillery devoted their attention to "wire cutting". Two patrols were sent out at night to reconnoitre the wire, and ascertain if the trench attacked previous night was still held. If possible, to enter same. 2Lieut WILLMOT, D Coy took out a patrol of 10 men S of BIHECOURT - BELLENGLISE road and reconnoitred the wire. He reported it damaged by artillery a little, but still presented a formidable obstacle, and also that the trench was still held. Owing to the brilliancy of the moon close reconnaissance was very difficult. 2Lieut ROBINSON "C" Coy took out a patrol of 10 men N of BIHECOURT - BELLENGLISE Rd to reconnoitre this section of trench with same object as 2Lt WILLMOTT. He reported the wire still uncut and the trench held, also located a MG on road at R11c 8.7 (Sheet 62c). This gun was confirmed on GERMAN sketch found later in the by 2Lieut Robinson. Wounded 2 OR.
