War Diary

1945-06-18
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Tangermunde, Germany
Entry 1600: The Adv Party, commanded by Major G.F. WOOLNOUGH M.C. left for EINBECK (4760). This move foreshadowed another move of the Bn in the very near future, and it was brought about by the fact that the RUSSIANS were taking over certain areas WEST of the ELBE and this necessitated the withdrawal of several BRITISH fmns. The details of the relief by the RUSSIANS were worked out on a very high level, and the Bn had no direct contact with the Russians regarding their move in or our departure. The Bn would relieve the 10 SURVEY REGT in EINBECK (4760) Strict security was observed during the period preceeding our departure from TANGERMUNDE and on a battalion level no orders were written, but were all given verbally. The code-word for the operation was HAMMER.
