War Diary

1944-09-27
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Jebel Mazar, Syria
Entry On this day the Bde Commander, Brigadier LORNE CAMPBELL, V.C., D.S.O., TD, left the Brigade he had commanded in many succesful batles in SICILY and ITALY. He had been appointed B.G.S. (TRG) at WASHINGTON. The Brigadier joined 13 BRIGADE in the same camp in MAY 43, before the DIVISION invaded SICILY and it is strange that he should leave us in the same camp. All ranks in the brigade were sorry to lose him and he too expressed his regret at his departure. Until the arrival of the new Brigadier, who was unknown, the Commanding Officer of this Battalion - LT COLONEL E.A. HEFFORD D.S.O, assumed command of the brigade. The battalion rounded off what had been a very interesting month's training by remedying certain weaknesses in the training that had been brought out in exercises. Further efforts were made to improve the standard of shooting still more, as although it had reached a much higher standard, there was still much room for improvement. [Signed] E.A. Hefford Lieut-Colonel Commanding, 2nd Bn. The Wiltshire Regiment.
