Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Camp 22, Beit Lid 155186, Tulkarm, Palestine
Entry [1 - 18th] The Battalion remained in this location for the whole of the month of August. Training was carried out as planned, beginning with the completion of individual training and then developing into section and platoon training. Specialist platoons and groups carried out their own trg independently once the individual training had ended. This consisted of improving the standard of the existing specialists, and training reserves; - especially for the Mortar and signal platoons. 10th: On this day the Battalion received a very great honour. His Majesty the King granted the V.C. (posthumously) to 5568932 Sgt. M.A.W. Rogers M.M. for his gallant action at ARDEA on 3rd June 44, which was described in the War Diary for that month. This is the first V.C. to be won by this Regiment in this war and the second in the history of the Regiment. The first V.C. was also won by a member of the 2nd Bn in the First World War 1914-1918. Moreover it was the first V.C. in the 5th Division. Congratulations were received from all units in the Division and many other units outside the Division. During this period all the men in the Battalion fired a course with the rifle and bren on the open range at RISHON (128151) and a Battalion Rifle Meeting was held on the same range on the 18th. In this same period all Coys practised the handling of Assault Boats and light rafts on the LITANI RIVER (105155) in Southern Syria. Reference to Appendices: Ref Map DAMASCUS 1/500,000.
