War Diary

1944-07-18
Regiment 2nd Wiltshire
Location Tulkarm, Palestine
Entry [18 - 31st] In this period the battalion settled down to training. The C.O. directed that the first month would be devoted entirely to individual training, to improve the standard of weapon training, physical fitness, drill and all subjects which affect the individual soldier. When this had been completed the battalion would then go on to section, platoon and specialist training. Each coy was to have one rest day a week and one Adm day. 8 hrs work would be done daily. In addition, on their Adm Day, each coy was allowed transport to visit TEL AVIV, HAIFA, JERUSALEM, or wherever they chose to go. Naturally owing to the internal situation great care had to be exercised with regard to security of arms, ammunition and documents. Training was not limited to O.R's only. Officers had wireless training on one evening a week and Battalion and Bde T.E.W.Ts and model discussions were held. By the end of the month the battalion was hard at it, and it was decided to run a Bn Rifle Meeting and Sports Day in August. The C.O. held a weekly Soviet, which consisted of one or two Pte soldiers from each coy. They brought to the notice of the C.O. any suggestions for the improvement of the trg, administrative and welfare side of the Bn's present existance. This system worked well and several improvements were made. [Signed] E.A. Hefford Lieut-Colonel Commanding, 2nd Bn. The Wiltshire Regiment.
