Entry 0400hrs: Company Comds reported to the C.O. that they believed the enemy had gone, as all was quiet. Patrols were immediately sent out and the enemy positions were found to be unoccupied. Immediately pre-arranged plans were put into operation to pursue the enemy. This consisted of a flying column formed by 13 I.B. embussed with att troops, 2 CAMERONIANS forming the advance guard. 1430hrs: The battalion moved off at the head of the main body and moved forward about 7 miles. 2 CAMERONIANS had encountered only minor opposition and had reached their objectives on the southern banks of the RIVER TIBER. The battalion did not move any further forward, but bivouaced the night non-tactically about 6 miles NORTH of ARDEA. So ended eleven months' fighting. The Bn has been in action, continuously except for periodic breaks of three or four days, from the Invasion of SICILY to the fall of ROME. Casualties during this period were :- (a) SICILY 6 Offrs and 90 O.R's (b) ITALY 21 Offrs and 500 O.R's (c) TOTAL 27 Offrs and 590 O.R's It is now known that the Div is to be given three or four months out of action to rest, and train.
